Monticello Street and Address Standardization
Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.’s)
Why
is my street address changing?
Over
the years, there have been errors and inconsistencies in following the
uniform addressing system described in City Code. A comprehensive review
of all existing street names and addresses has been completed, where
addresses were assigned to each home or business based on its relative
distance from Main or Center Street.
What
types of changes are being made?
Depending on your current address, some address numbers have changed,
some street names have changed, some street numbers have changed, and
some addresses have been given a directional designation such as
“North,” “South,” “East,” or “West.” We have also standardized the
formats of street numbers and spellings or street names. (See table on
reverse.)
My
number only changed a little, why?
The
number on your home or business is based on its relative distance either
north, south, east or west, from Main or Center Street. Your old number
could have been slightly off, so now it is being corrected.
Why
did the name or number of my street change?
Some
street numbers changed to better reflect their distance from Main or
Center Street. For example, 500 East became 450 East. Some street names
changed to eliminate confusion and standardize spelling. For example,
Central is now Center, 1st, 2nd, 3rd,
etc., are now 100, 200, 300, etc., and Silverstone West is now Latigo
Loop.
Why
did Silverstone West change to Latigo Loop?
To
eliminate the confusion of having two streets with similar names right
next to one another. The word “Latigo” refers to “Latigo” Gordon in
Monticello history. According to Dorothy Adams, W.E. “Latigo” Gordon,
was appointed sheriff in 1896, and he was also the builder and
proprietor of the Blue Goose Saloon around 1900. Both “Latigo” Gordon
and the Blue Goose Saloon are mentioned in the “Blue Mountain” song. The
word “Loop” is self-explanatory.
Will
these address changes affect my property tax assessment?
No,
the changes that will be made are to your home’s physical address. San
Juan County assesses taxes by parcel numbers and uses your Post Office
Box for notifications.
Is
the City of Monticello going to provide me with the new numbers to put
on my house?
The
City has a limited number of black and white reflective numbers that are
available, while supplies last, on a first come first serve basis.
Otherwise, you are responsible for providing the number you use.
What
type of number should I use?
City
Code requires numbers that are at least three inches (3”) in height and
made of a durable and clearly visible material.

What
if my Mortgage/Insurance company thinks I have moved because of the
address changes?
In
most instances this can be handled between you and your
Mortgage/Insurance company with a simple message from you to notify them
of the change. However, if they require additional information, the City
can assist by providing a formal letter discussing the change.
By
when do I need to have the new address on my house?
Our
goal is to have the correct address displayed on every house or business
by March 31, 2007.
City Code allows thirty (30) days after notification of the new
address.
Do I
need to inform the shipping companies I receive packages from that my
address has changed?
Carriers like UPS have been contacted regarding the change and they feel
that it will not affect their delivery much because they already know
which names go with which houses. They did state, however, that it would
be a huge help if all houses would display numbers visible from the
street near the front entrance of the home/business.
Will
other utilities know about the changes to my address?
Yes,
the City plans to notify other utility companies about any address
changes.
Why
should I place the numbers on my house?
One
major reason is so that emergency services personnel can identify your
house or business in the event of an emergency. Also, shipping companies
will have an easier time knowing where to drop packages when they see
the correct number displayed. It will be more convenient for friends and
neighbors. Furthermore, it is required by City Code.
What
if I forget my new address or have additional questions?
Additional information, including your new address, will be available on
the City’s web site
www.monticelloutah.org, or call the City Office at 435-587-2271.
